Walking Dreams

Greece not only entices its visitors with its stunning sandy beaches and almost endless swimming possibilities but also with its rich mountainous landscapes and opportunities for hiking. And all year round too! Whether on the Greek islands, the Peloponnese or in the middle of the mountainous world of Hellas, you will find all sorts of trails at various difficulty levels, from enjoyable strolls to sweat-inducing challenges.

Despite their differences, all Greek hikes have one thing in common: Breath-taking views and unique, spectacular natural wonders! Impressive gorges like those found on Crete, imposing mountain ranges such as the mountain wilderness of Mount Olympus, dream landscapes and national parks on the Peloponnese, or extensive bays with azure blue waters on the Cyclades islands: Hiking through Greece is an adventure!

Add to this the many quaint villages and ancient sites, and every tour becomes a cultural experience too. On foot in Greece, you will experience the authentic, original side of the country, far away from mass tourism. Encounters with the country and its people, its culture, and history are additional memories that will make your walking holiday an unforgettable experience! Hike with us through Greece and experience the country individually or on a guided group hiking tour!

What are the most beautiful hiking locations in Greece?
All of Greece is an adventure on foot! We have also put together a list of hiking highlights for you: Mount Olympus is the ideal terrain for hiking tours and, as the highest mountain range in the Greek region, it is home to rare animal and plant species. In summer, it is the absolute hiking hotspot in Greece – the perfect place to escape the heat of the Greek high summer.

The second most popular hiking trail in Greece, after the Samaria Gorge in Crete, is the trail from Prionia to the great Spilios Agapitos mountain hut at 2,100 m / 6,890 ft. and on to the second-highest peak in Greece, Skolio at 2,911 m / 9,550 ft. This trail is part of the international long-distance hiking trail E4.

Mount Olympus is a must-see with its seven mountain huts open all year round at various locations offering accommodation and food, and with its extensive network of well-maintained and signposted trails through forests, along small rivers, and past waterfalls. Hiking is possible without winter equipment or expert experience from June to October in the upper section, and almost all year round in the lower section of the mountain.

Just as impressive as Mount Olympus is the Parnassos Mountains. The region has accessible high-altitude terrain up to 2,450 m / 8,038 ft. above sea level. Here you will find beautiful and well-maintained paths through mystical forests as well as rewarding hiking trails to Delphi.

Zagori is not just a mountain, but an entire region well worth exploring on foot. The traditional stone villages with paths and old cobblestone roads as well as centuries-old stone bridges are a sight to behold! The impressive Vikos Gorge as well as the mountain range of Tymfi, which forms part of the Pindus Mountains, also known as “the Greek Alps”, dominate the landscape.

A particularly beautiful hike leads from the village of Mikro Papingo to the Astraka mountain hut and on to the famous Dragon Lake at 2,050 m / 6,725 ft. above sea level. The mountain hut is open from May to October. By far the best time to visit is early summer from June to mid-July, when many of the small lakes are filled with crystal-clear mountain water and the meadows are blanketed with knee-high grass and flowers.

The Pelion Peninsula offers a similar combination of traditional villages, old cobblestone paths, dense forests, mountain massifs, and incredibly beautiful sea and beaches. The most beautiful time to visit is probably in autumn when the forests are brightly coloured in fiery hues and the sea is still warm.

Which Greek islands have the best hiking trails?
Arguably, every single island in Greece is worth exploring on foot. In our opinion, the Cyclades are particularly beautiful for hiking, with their archaic landscape, azure sea, and extensive network of ancient paths.

In addition, the Meltemi provides a fresh breeze and pleasant temperature with relatively low humidity on most days during summer. Were it not for the Meltemi, you would only be able to walk in the Cyclades in the early morning or late afternoon during the height of summer, as there is hardly any shade. However, thanks to this refreshing wind, it is possible to explore on foot throughout the day!

Hiking highlights include the Cycladic islands of Kea, Andros, Tinos, Naxos, Serifos, Sikinos, Amorgos, Koufonisi, and Donoussa (small Cyclades) as well as Anafi. Another island that is a must for beautiful hikes full of adventure is Samothrace in the northern Aegean Sea. At every turn, you’ll discover a different gorge with a glistening river and dozens of waterfalls. The green island has few but very exceptional beaches.

A dream destination for exploring on foot is certainly the largest Greek island: Crete. Waterfalls, hidden gorges, kilometre-long trails from easy to challenging – Crete has it all! The European hiking trail E4 on the southern coast, in particular, offers stunning beaches and sensational views.

The trails on Hydra in the Saronic Gulf and the Ionian Islands with Ithaca, northern Kefalonia, and the 200 km / 124 mi. long legendary Corfu Trail that leads past old villages, dense olive forests, and landscapes far away from tourism are also highly recommended.

Can I go hiking in and around Athens?
Athens may be a big city jungle, but it is also a worthwhile holiday destination for hiking! In addition to guided cultural or culinary walks and tours through the metropolis itself, the surrounding area of Athens also offers spectacular nature and a mountain world that is well worth discovering on foot!

Mount Ymittos and Mount Parnitha to the north of the capital, as well as the Sounion National Park, are worthwhile excursion destinations for anyone wishing to explore the natural world of Attica.

When is the best time for a hiking holiday in Greece?
Greece is a year-round hiking paradise – thanks to its Mediterranean climate! In spring and autumn, Hellas offers pleasant temperatures above 20 °C / 68 °F during the day, perfect for any active holiday.

In autumn, the sea is still warm enough to combine your hiking trip with a refreshing swim. The winter months are so mild on the southern Aegean islands and Crete that you can explore all the trails on foot even during the colder months. The only thing you should always have with you is a rain jacket and sturdy shoes!

Are you more of a summit climber and don’t mind a little rougher, colder weather? Then Mount Olympus and the mountains around the Gulf of Corinth offer varied hiking terrain even in autumn and winter!

If you prefer to visit Greece during the summer months, you can also indulge your passion for hiking. We recommend the Peloponnese and the Cyclades Islands, where the Meltemi wind blows during the hottest months from June to August, providing a refreshing breeze.
