The coastal town of Rethymno is one of Crete’s most picturesque spots. Join us on a variety-packed walking tour through the charming old town, and along the way, you will discover Rethymno at its most authentic.
Get to know the town, which has been characterised by its many conquerors, through the eyes and stories of the locals! During the tour, your local guide shares the rich and varied history of Crete with wit and charm.
Follow in the footsteps of Venetian aristocrats and Ottoman sultans as you explore the winding alleys and discover the hidden corners of this enchanting town. Along the way, we visit artisans and artists and sample the tastiest local delicacies!
We offer our culinary tour of Rethymno daily all year round (except Sundays) starting at 9:30 am.
Experience authentic daily life right in the heart of the city, topped off with tastings of local delicacies. As we stroll through the winding streets of Rethymno, we discover the rich thousand-year history of a town that began to grow after the Venetian conquest. Rethymno’s well-preserved Venetian harbour harks back to this era, and the beautiful lighthouse is still a favourite meeting place for the locals.
We start our tour the way the Greeks usually start their day; with a freshly brewed Greek coffee in a local kafeneion. There we mingle with the locals and the guide explains how conquerors from East and West influenced the Cretan cuisine. If you would like to know what the future holds for you, you can find out by having your coffee grounds read, a centuries-old tradition!
Afterwards, we stroll through the old Ottoman quarter of Sabbionara. A cobblestone labyrinth leads us past impressive villas with unique exterior décor and ornate door frames. Along the way, we visit local artisans and have the opportunity to observe them at work in their workshops.
We then discover Crete’s unique flavours. Our culinary tastings range from a traditional ring-shaped sesame bread to fresh local cheese and olives. We also taste the world-famous Cretan olive oil and find out why it is considered one of the best in the world. Of course, we also learn other secrets of the celebrated Cretan diet.
Later, we continue our walk through the boulevards and hidden back alleys of the old town. We have plenty of time to take photos of the most picturesque corners of the town and visit authentic souvenir shops.
Our last stop is a secret garden in the centre of the old town, where we take part in an exclusive tasting of local wines. The history of wine growing in Crete dates back to the great Minoan period, the 2nd millennium BC!
Our Rethymno walking tour ends here. Of course, you can continue exploring the city and the waterfront on your own. Your guide is happy to recommend many more places worth seeing and other hidden treasures of this beautiful town!
