Discover the wilderness of the Mani by kayak

Enjoy magnificent nature and unique architecture!

The Mani Peninsula is a true hidden treasure. Located on the southern coast of the Peloponnese, its wild, rugged, and dramatic landscape never fails to leave its visitors in awe. Picturesque seaside fishing villages contrast with inland hermetically sealed tower houses. Charming bays, beautiful beaches, and numerous hidden caves characterise the varied coastline.

The imposing Taygettos Mountains form a natural border between the Mani Peninsula and the Peloponnese. This natural barrier isolated the Mani people from the rest of the world for thousands of years, resulting in a completely independent way of living and local culture on Mani, which is still clearly noticeable today. If you would like to have an authentic Greek experience, then come to Mani and join us on our variety-packed kayak trip!

Highlights

  • Unique architecture: The tower houses of Mani
  • Natural spectacle: The legendary Diros Grotto, one of the largest sea caves in the world
  • At the end of the world: Cape Tenero – the southernmost point of mainland Europe

Due to the staggered tour prices, this tour can be arranged for as few as 2 participants. The larger the group, the lower the tour price for each individual.

DAY 1
Kalamata (Arrival): Individual arrival in Kalamata on the Peloponnese or in Athens. Your guide meets you at the airport and drives you to the city centre of Kalamata.

After checking into your hotel, you are given a briefing about the coming days. Dinner together in a harbour taverna. Overnight stay in Kalamata.

DAY 2
Kalamata – Kardamyli (approx. 10 nautical miles, 4-5 hours): After a hearty breakfast, we set off to the starting point of the kayak tour. The kayaks are waiting for us on the beach. After adjusting the equipment and a safety briefing, the paddling adventure can begin.

We head south along the beautiful coast of the Messinian Gulf until we reach the fishing village of Kitries with its unique lighthouse. From here it is not far to a hidden sandy beach where we enjoy a picnic and have time to swim and snorkel.

Afterwards, we jump back into the kayaks and continue paddling. Soon the scenery becomes more rugged and wild. We later arrive at our destination for the day, Kardamyli, an idyllic seaside town where we spend the night.

DAY 3
Kardamyli – Agios Nikolaos (approx. 8 nautical miles, 4-5 hours): Today’s kayak tour starts in the old harbour of Kardamyli. Once again, we head southwards along a particularly varied stretch of coastline. We pass beautiful beaches and rocky outcrops and explore hidden sea caves, some of which we explore by kayak and some of which we can even swim in – a truly unforgettable experience!

Along the way, we make stops in Stoupa with its famous beach Kalogria and Agios Nikolaos with its picturesque harbour. In the afternoon we arrive at the sandy beach of Pantazis, our overnight stop today.

DAY 4
Agios Nikolaos – Limeni (approx. 11 nautical miles/5-6 hours: Up to now, the surrounding landscape has been characterised by fertile vegetation, but today we head towards a drier region with a rugged coastline. After Agios Nikolaos, the distance between the coastal towns also increases.

Along the way, we discover the Katafygi Cave, the bed of an underground river. Later we pass the village of Chotasia, rich in natural salt deposits. In former times, the locals harvested this salt as their main source of income for their livelihood.

Our destination today is the charming harbour of Limeni, situated directly by the sea. Here you can relax and enjoy the picturesque atmosphere.

DAY 5
Limeni – Diros Grotto – Mezapos Bay (approx. 11 nautical miles/4-5 hours): Today we glide through the deep blue sea past impressive cliffs. On our way, you will have the chance to visit to the famous Diros Grotto (entrance at your own expense)! This is one of the largest sea caves in the world and a spectacular labyrinth of impressive stalagmites and stalactites.

We then continue southwards until we reach a small fjord, the ideal place for our midday picnic and swimming break. With renewed energy, we then cover the last stretch of today’s tour to the sheltered bay of Mezapos, where we spend the night.

DAY 6
Mezapos – Gerolimenas (approx. 10 nautical miles/4-5 hours): After an early breakfast, we prepare for the most challenging stretch of the week. The breath-taking views on our way around Cavo Grosso, a massive outcrop with 10 km / 6 mi. long cliffs, make up for the effort.

The total solitude of this region is truly spectacular. In the afternoon we reach Gerolimenas, where we celebrate completing this eventful day with a delicious meal in a traditional taverna and spend the night.

DAY 7
Gerolimenas – Cape Tenero (10 nautical miles/4-5 hours): Our destination today is no less than the southernmost point of mainland Europe: Cape Tenaro! While paddling along the coast, we come across impressive views of fortified settlements again and again.

The village of Vathia, perched high on a hill, with its numerous tower houses, is a particularly striking sight. At the secluded beach of Marmari, we stop for our picnic. Afterwards, we pass the gate of Hades, which according to Greek mythology is one of the entrances to the underworld.

Not far from here is the enchanting Cape Tenero lighthouse. Soon we reach a fjord-like bay, our destination for the day.

DAY 8
Departure from Kalamata or Athens: After breakfast transfer to Kalamata or Athens Airport. Individual journey home or extension of your holiday in Greece. If you would like to see and experience more of the country, please see our extension recommendations.

Camping, Comfort, or Luxury – it’s up to you!

On this trip you can choose between the following accommodation options:

Expedition – 1 x hotel, 6 x camping / Comfort – 4 x hotel, 3 x camping / Luxury – 7 x hotel.

All the overnight stays are in carefully selected, cosy hotels and guesthouses, where you can look forward to the comforts of a hot shower, a comfortable bed, hospitable owners, and WIFI.

If you choose the camping-only or mixed camping/hotel option, the nights spent outdoors will look something like this: We land on a beautiful beach in the afternoon, set up camp for the night, light a fire, and prepare our own dinner.

What are the age requirements for this tour?
This tour is not suitable for young children due to the length and the challenging nature of the kayak tours. In our opinion, young people aged 14 and over with a good level of fitness should be able to manage this tour.

What language is this tour conducted in?
This tour is guided in English only.

What meals are included?
Full board is included in the tour price, consisting of a daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lunch during the tours usually consists of a picnic. As is typical of Greek culture, our groups usually eat together. This allows us to try a wider variety of dishes and enjoy each other’s company.

If you would like to eat vegetarian or have food intolerances, please let us know before you start your trip. Vegan meals are unfortunately not available on this tour. All drinks are not included.

Are changes to the itinerary possible?
Wind and weather can of course influence an outdoor tour like this and occasionally force us to make changes to the tour itinerary. The safety of our guests is always our top priority.

Our experienced guides know Mani like the back of their hand and will try to find suitable alternatives should the planned itinerary not be possible due to extreme weather conditions.

How difficult is this tour?
This kayak tour is suitable for beginners as well as advanced kayakers. However, a good basic level of fitness is required. Each participant will receive a detailed briefing on the use of the equipment and effort-saving paddling techniques at the beginning of the trip.

Our guide is a certified kayak guide and of course, has first aid training as well as training in dealing with emergency situations. They will also be happy to give you advice at any time during the trip if you want to optimise your technique.

Our support vehicle is available throughout the week to transport your luggage, food, and other equipment. This way you don’t have to carry unnecessary weight with you in your kayak.

How do I get to Kalamata or Athens?
Kalamata has its own airport with both domestic and international flights. If you can’t find a direct flight to Kalamata, we recommend connecting via Athens Airport. Transfers between Kalamata or Athens Airport and the hotel on the day of arrival and departure are included in the tour price.

What should I include on my packing list for this tour?
Greece has a temperate climate. We, therefore, recommend that you dress in layers, so that you can always take something off or put something on if it is too warm/cold.

We also recommend packing as light as possible, as heavy luggage can quickly become a burden. Below is a small list of items we recommend bringing. This is only a guideline and can always be modified to suit your own needs.
