Hiking on Hydra

The island beloved by Leonard Cohen

Do you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Athens for a day and experience pure island idyll? Would you like to explore an island on foot and enjoy a dip in the sparkling blue waters? On Hydra you can have this all, and much more!

With one of the most picturesque harbours in all of Greece, Hydra is the jewel of the Saronic Gulf. Magnificent captain’s houses, which testify to the wealth of bygone times, are nestled in the amphitheatre-shaped harbour bay. This is a sight that is sure to take your breath away as soon as you arrive on Hydra. The most striking thing on entering the marble quay of the harbour is the island’s heavenly tranquillity.

Hydra is completely traffic-free, so you can only get around on foot or by donkey. On the island, time seems to have stood still. Hydra’s unique and special charm has already captivated countless artists. The unforgettable Canadian multi-talent Leonard Cohen, who made a name for himself as a musician as well as a writer and painter, fell so much in love with Hydra that he even bought a house and wrote two books on the island.

WHAT TO EXPECT
We collect you from your accommodation in Athens early in the morning and transfer you to the port of Piraeus. Hydra’s proximity to Athens makes it an ideal day trip destination, as it only takes an hour and a half to get there by high-speed ferry.

Once on Hydra, we take the path up to the 588 m / 1,929 ft. high Mount Eros, the highest point on the island. We start the hike directly from the harbour and follow the “main road” that leads to Kala Pigadia. From there we continue along the wide cobblestone road through a dense pine forest to the monastery of the Prophet Elias. After a final climb, we reach the top of Mount Eros, from where we are rewarded with a view across the endless blue sea.

On our way back, we stop for a picnic at the monastery and from there take the same route down towards the harbour town. Before taking the ferry back to Athens in the evening, you have plenty of free time to explore the charming town of Hydra with its distinctive architectural character and unique atmosphere.

Once back in Piraeus, we transfer you back to your accommodation. Ferry: Athens – Hydra 8:00-9:35 / Hydra – Athens 19:20-21:00. The 9 km / 5.5 mi. hike on Hydra takes about 4-5 hours.
