Hiking on Mount Ymittos

If you love hiking and crave a few hours in nature away from the hustle and bustle of the city during your holiday in Athens, this hiking tour up Mount Ymittos is perfect for you. Less than a 15-minute drive from the centre of Athens, you can completely escape the buzz of the city for a while.

You don’t have to worry about getting there, as we transfer you to Mount Ymittos and back to Athens afterwards. During our tour, you can explore abundant nature, visit beautiful monasteries, and enjoy a view of the whole of Athens and the Saronic Gulf from high above.

Your guide leads you along the most beautiful paths of Mount Ymittos, shares many interesting facts and stories along the way, and treats you to a well-deserved coffee break. One of the highlights of this discovery tour is our visit to the Kaisariani Monastery. The Orthodox monastery dates back to the 11th century and has been preserved almost completely intact. An oasis of silence and magnificent frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries await you here.

You can combine this half-day tour with a longer stay in Athens and the surrounding area to get to know the city and the beautiful countryside and nature of the Greek capital.

This hiking tour is available every day all year round. We arrange the exact meeting time in Athens with you before the start of the tour.


WHAT TO EXPECT
We meet at the Panathenaic Stadium (Kalimarmaro) in the centre of Athens at 9 am. A short transfer takes us to the northern side of Mount Ymittos at an altitude of 430 m / 1,410 ft. above sea level. Here we start our approx. 8 km / 5 mi. long hike, which takes us up to 730 m / 2,395 ft. above sea level.

Our hike leads along the most beautiful hiking trails on Mount Ymittos. On the way, we can look forward to fabulous panoramic views over the city of Athens, its harbour town Piraeus and the Saronic Islands off the coast of the capital.

We stop several times to take photos and to visit two magnificent Orthodox monasteries, Asterion and Kaisariani.

Our knowledgeable guide gives us an insight into the religious world of Greece and is always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Enjoy the magnificent nature, the enchanting forest of Kaiseriani, and getting some exercise in the fresh air! A coffee break in these wonderful surroundings is also a must!

After a wonderful hiking experience, we take a transfer back to Athens.

What are the age requirements for this tour?
This tour is suitable for participants of all ages as it does not have any special requirements. In our opinion, children aged 13+ should be able to participate without any problems.

What language is the tour conducted in?
This tour is conducted exclusively in English.

Are changes to the tour itinerary possible?
We are constantly updating our unique itineraries based on new information and experiences. We reserve the right to make changes to the published itinerary if, in our opinion, weather conditions warrant it, or the safety of participants can no longer be guaranteed.

How difficult is this tour?
We have classified the 8.5 km / 5.3 mi. hike on Mount Ymittos as easy. This makes it an ideal outdoor activity for anyone who enjoys exercise, has an average level of physical fitness and is accustomed to walking for 3-5 hours. Good footwear and surefootedness are required.

What should I bring on this tour?
We recommend bringing as little as possible with you on this tour. Below you will find a brief guideline as to what you should bring with you for the day, which you can of course modify to suit your own needs.
