WHERE TO MEET
Thessaloniki is a crossroads between East and West and this is reflected not only in its diverse architecture but also in its cuisine, which has been inspired by different cultures over the centuries.

As we are sampling a wide range of food today, we advise you to have a small breakfast. We start our culinary tour at Aristotelous Square in the heart of the city, just a stone’s throw away from the waterfront. This square, surrounded by impressive neoclassical buildings, is the busiest and most important in Thessaloniki.

As drinking coffee is a daily ritual in Greece, we can’t start the day without enjoying a cup of freshly brewed Greek coffee in a traditional kafeneion. Enjoy the atmosphere as we mingle with the locals and learn all about Greek coffee culture.

We then walk through Thessaloniki’s bustling business district, stopping at various shops and sampling unique treats along the way, from traditional sesame bread rings, koulouri, to puff pastry bougatsa.

Nowhere does this delicacy taste better than in Thessaloniki! These delicious treats can be filled with almost anything, such as sweet cream, spinach, cheese, minced meat, and much more!

VISIT TO THESSALONIKI'S MARKETS
We continue our culinary tour with a visit to Thessaloniki’s two most famous open-air markets. We stroll through cobblestone alleys where locals buy fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, spices, dairy products, homemade produce, and many local specialities every day. While tasting olives, cheese and much more, our guide entertains us with exciting market stories.

Next, we head to Athonos Square, which exudes an old-world charm with its many traditional “ouzeries” and small tavernas. Just like the locals, we take our time to enjoy delicious meze (local Greek tapas) paired with ouzo or tsipouro in an old-established ouzeri.

TIME FOR A SWEET TREAT
Our Thessaloniki tour wouldn’t be complete without stopping at a pastry shop with freshly made local sweets. Try the delicious “siropiasta”, a variety of syrupy sweets that originated in Istanbul and Asia Minor. The recipes for these were brought to Thessaloniki by Greek refugees from these areas in the 1920s and they are still made in this traditional way today.

Our tour ends either here, a perfect place to continue exploring the city on your own, or at the starting point of the tour in Aristotelous Square.

Before parting ways, don’t forget to ask your guide for more tips and advice on how to make the most of your stay in the fascinating city of Thessaloniki.
