Andros and Tinos are two almost untouched jewels of the Cyclades archipelago. If you are looking for an authentic island experience combined with spectacular hikes, this is the tour for you!
Both islands are home to picturesque Cycladic settlements with narrow alleys, white cube houses, and enchanting nature. The islands also have numerous beautiful sandy beaches and secluded bays. The two islands also have their own unique and special characteristics. Andros has abundant natural springs and so the vegetation on the island is correspondingly lush. This second largest of the Cycladic islands is covered with beautiful olive groves, fragrant pine trees, and various fruit trees. The island capital, Chora, is one of the most beautiful Cycladic towns.
The neighbouring island of Tinos contrastingly is typical of the barren, rugged character of many Cycladic islands. Countless dry-stone walls stretch across the completely terraced island. The more than 600 pigeon towers, each of which is unique, are a special architectural feature of the island. Tinos also holds the status of a holy island because of its devotion to the Virgin Mary. The Panagia Evangelistria in Tinos Town is one of the 750 churches and chapels on the island.
On this hiking tour, you’ll explore traditional villages and amazing artisan craftsmanship as you follow beautiful trails across the islands. Enjoy breath-taking views and orange-red sunsets! Andros and Tinos are the perfect places to experience the life of the Greek islanders.
You can choose between a self-guided option, where you do the hikes alone with the help of maps which we provide, or a guided option with a local guide (see services).
Enjoy stunning panoramic views of the west coast and the ancient port of Palaiopolis. The paved path leads past sacred oaks and ancient olive groves. Along the way, you pass two small waterfalls, the water mills of Melida, and an olive oil museum.
The destination of today’s leg is the picturesque village of Pitrofos. From there a transfer brings you to the eastern side of the island to the main town of Chora, where you spend the night.
Here the paved hiking trail begins, leading parallel to the Pythara Gorge up to the village of Apikia. On the way, you learn about the traditional seafaring settlements and rural Andros. On a cobblestone path, you descend towards Chora.
You can enjoy wonderful views of the island’s sea-washed capital. This section of the trail is equally varied: you pass the old water mill of the pasta factory ‘Fabrica’, a medieval stone bridge, a 17th-century tower, and the Pythara waterfalls.
In the afternoon you have time to stroll around the picturesque town of Chora or go swimming. Overnight stay in Chora.
Along the way, you pass the island’s two medieval castles. You also cross the Dipotomata Gorge, a valley with impressive watermills and an arched bridge.
The tour ends in Korthi, a traditional seaside village with a large beach and a picturesque fishing harbour. Later on, a transfer takes you back to Chora for another overnight stay.
Once you arrive on the ‘Holy Island’, you check into your hotel room in Tinos Town. You are free to spend the rest of the day exploring the island’s capital. A visit to the church of Panagia Evangelistria, which towers majestically over the town, is particularly worthwhile.
The church was built during the Greek liberation struggle of 1821-1830 on the exact spot where the nun Pelagia predicted the discovery of an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary. The fact that the icon was indeed found exactly on that spot was seen as a good omen for the favourable outcome of the struggle.
Since then, the icon is said to have performed numerous other miracles and is highly venerated throughout Greece. Many pilgrims make the 800-metre walk from the harbour to the church hill on their knees. Overnight stay in Tinos town.
There are many pigeon towers here – you are sure to be amazed at the variety of geometric adornments with which they are decorated. The path down to the bay of Kiona has magnificent views over the deep blue shimmering Aegean Sea.
Here there is a beautiful beach where you can take a well-deserved dip in the sea. The 3 km return to Tinos Town can be done either on foot or by taxi. Overnight stay in Tinos.
Your final destination for today’s hike is Falatados. The second-largest settlement on Tinos impresses with an imposing cathedral and the famous ‘House of Sketch’, where the cartoons by Kostas and Vasilis Mitropoulos, famous beyond the country’s borders, are exhibited.
From Falatados, return transfer to Tinos Town for another overnight stay. Spend the afternoon swimming or simply relaxing.
Of course, you can also extend your holiday in Greece on other islands such as Mykonos, Naxos, or Paros. There are direct ferry connections from Tinos Town to these islands.
During this trip, you will be accommodated in beautiful boutique hotels, which reflect the typical charm of the Cyclades Islands in their architecture. Here, tradition meets comfort; the spacious rooms are equipped with a shower and toilet, air conditioning, and often have a balcony or terrace.
The friendly staff will ensure that you want for nothing. Every day starts with a rich and delicious breakfast. WIFI is available around the clock in the hotels.
