Authentic Island Hiking on Andros & Tinos

Discover the Charm of the Cyclades Islands

Andros and Tinos are two almost untouched jewels of the Cyclades archipelago. If you are looking for an authentic island experience combined with spectacular hikes, this is the tour for you!

Both islands are home to picturesque Cycladic settlements with narrow alleys, white cube houses, and enchanting nature. The islands also have numerous beautiful sandy beaches and secluded bays. The two islands also have their own unique and special characteristics. Andros has abundant natural springs and so the vegetation on the island is correspondingly lush. This second largest of the Cycladic islands is covered with beautiful olive groves, fragrant pine trees, and various fruit trees. The island capital, Chora, is one of the most beautiful Cycladic towns.

The neighbouring island of Tinos contrastingly is typical of the barren, rugged character of many Cycladic islands. Countless dry-stone walls stretch across the completely terraced island. The more than 600 pigeon towers, each of which is unique, are a special architectural feature of the island. Tinos also holds the status of a holy island because of its devotion to the Virgin Mary. The Panagia Evangelistria in Tinos Town is one of the 750 churches and chapels on the island.

On this hiking tour, you’ll explore traditional villages and amazing artisan craftsmanship as you follow beautiful trails across the islands. Enjoy breath-taking views and orange-red sunsets! Andros and Tinos are the perfect places to experience the life of the Greek islanders.

  • Made for hiking: Idyllic trails are waiting to be explored
  • With a view: Look forward to unforgettable panoramas
  • Unique to the island: The pigeon towers on Tinos can’t be found anywhere else

This tour is offered all year round except July and August with a minimum of 2 participants.

You can choose between a self-guided option, where you do the hikes alone with the help of maps which we provide, or a guided option with a local guide (see services).

Arrival on Andros | You take the ferry from Rafina to Andros where a transfer is waiting to take you to your hotel. If you chose the guided option, the local guide meets you after check-in and gives you an overview of the coming days with a welcome drink and a selection of Greek delicacies. The night is spent in the beautiful capital of Chora.

Andros: Loop hike Chora – Apikia – Chora (approx. 7.5 mi. / 12 km, 5 hours) | After a delicious breakfast, the first hike of the week begins!

Today a wonderful loop hike is on the programme. At the beginning of the hike, a natural spectacle awaits you at Gialia Beach, created by the river mouth.

Here the paved hiking trail begins, leading parallel to the Pythara Gorge up to the village of Apikia. On the way, you learn about the traditional seafaring settlements and rural Andros. On a cobblestone path, you descend towards Chora.

You can enjoy wonderful views of the island’s sea-washed capital. This section of the trail is equally varied: you pass the old water mill of the pasta factory ‘Fabrica’, a medieval stone bridge, a 17th-century tower, and the Pythara waterfalls.

In the afternoon you have time to stroll around the picturesque town of Chora or go swimming. Overnight stay in Chora.

Andros: Hike from Chora to Korthi (approx. 7.5 mi. / 12 km, 5 hours) | Today’s hike can best be described as pure variety! Today you follow the old route that connects central and southern Andros – a route of extraordinary scenic beauty.

Along the way, you pass the island’s two medieval castles. You also cross the Dipotomata Gorge, a valley with impressive watermills and an arched bridge.

The tour ends in Korthi, a traditional seaside village with a large beach and a picturesque fishing harbour. Later on, a transfer takes you back to Chora for another overnight stay.

Andros: Chora – Pitrofos – Batsi (approx. 8.6 mi. / 13.8 km, 4.5 hours) | Embark on a morning journey to Upper Pitrofos, starting our hike from there through the extensive trail that winds through the interconnected paths. Traverse the historical route that once linked the southwest region of Andros to the central villages and Chora, known as the “Ample Way” or Fardia Strata.

During the initial phase of this exciting hike you cross panoramic views extending to the west coast.

Following an ancient cobblestone path with sacred oak trees, untamed olive groves, and seasonal crops you encounter two small waterfalls, the Melida watermills, and the intriguing Olive Oil Museum.

After this enriching experiences that unfold throughout this extended exploration finish your day at the charming seaside village of Batsi.

Andros to Tinos  | Today it is time to say goodbye to Andros. After a rich breakfast, a transfer brings you to the harbour from where you continue your journey by ferry to Tinos.

Once you arrive on the ‘Holy Island’, you check into your hotel room in Tinos Town. You are free to spend the rest of the day exploring the island’s capital. A visit to the church of Panagia Evangelistria, which towers majestically over the town, is particularly worthwhile.

The church was built during the Greek liberation struggle of 1821-1830 on the exact spot where the nun Pelagia predicted the discovery of an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary. The fact that the icon was indeed found exactly on that spot was seen as a good omen for the favourable outcome of the struggle.

Since then, the icon is said to have performed numerous other miracles and is highly venerated throughout Greece. Many pilgrims make the 800-metre walk from the harbour to the church hill on their knees. Overnight stay in Tinos town.

Tinos: Loop hike Tinos town – Ktikados – Kioma – Tinos town (approx. 6 mi. / 9 km, 5 hours) | On today’s loop hike you explore the picturesque villages and unique pigeon towers of Tinos. Following the ‘Kalderimi’ path, you pass the traditional settlements of Ktikados, Xatzidaros, and Tarambados.

There are many pigeon towers here – you are sure to be amazed at the variety of geometric adornments with which they are decorated. The path down to the bay of Kiona has magnificent views over the deep blue shimmering Aegean Sea.

Here there is a beautiful beach where you can take a well-deserved dip in the sea. The 3 km return to Tinos Town can be done either on foot or by taxi. Overnight stay in Tinos.

Tinos: Hike Tinos town – Exobourgo – Falatados (approx. 6 mi. / 10 km, 4 hours) | Today an old, paved path leads uphill to the Byzantine fortress of Exobourgo. The panoramic view that opens up here is breath-taking. You then continue to Volax, a remote, gleaming white village on a plateau framed by granite rocks.

Your final destination for today’s hike is Falatados. The second-largest settlement on Tinos impresses with an imposing cathedral and the famous ‘House of Sketch’, where the cartoons by Kostas and Vasilis Mitropoulos, famous beyond the country’s borders, are exhibited.

From Falatados, return transfer to Tinos Town for another overnight stay. Spend the afternoon swimming or simply relaxing.

Departure from Tinos | After these eventful days on the islands, your holiday week on Andros and Tinos comes to an end. Individual return by ferry to Rafina or Lavrio in Attica.

Of course, you can also extend your holiday in Greece on other islands such as Mykonos, Naxos, or Paros. There are direct ferry connections from Tinos Town to these islands.
