The street art scene in Athens is one of the hottest in Europe and home to many local and international artists.
Accompanied by a local street artist, you discover the most interesting and important works of this often ephemeral art. Along the way, you learn all about the backgrounds of the graffiti and artists that create it, as well as plenty of history about the districts you visit.
On this tour, you can look forward to classic graffiti art as well as underdog art with its fresh ideas, techniques, and messages. You’ve never seen Athens like this before!
This tour is available daily at 10 am all year round (excluding 25th and 26th December, New Year’s Day, and Easter Sunday).
We head off through Kerameikos, the ancient pottery quarter of Athens, to Gazi, the cultural heart of the metropolis. Here you will see how art and technology intermingle. In the centre of Gazi is an old gasworks which now houses numerous exhibitions and museums.
In this part of the city, we mainly find small apartment buildings that once belonged to the workers of the former coal-fired power plant, and which now have been converted into luxurious flats. The street art in this part of the city appears to be almost traditional in style.
The neighbouring district of Metaxourgio, the new hot spot for Athens street art, is a completely different experience. Here, all the artists’ creative energy is on display with plenty of space to exhibit their striking work.
During a coffee break, we have plenty of time to discuss all that we have seen with our guide and take a first look at the numerous photos taken on the first half of the tour.
Refreshed, we continue on to Psiri, the nightlife district of many Athenians and the original home of street art in Athens. The art we see here often bears a political and social significance. Our three-hour walk ends here with many exciting impressions and new insights into an Athens that are often missed by visitors to the city.
