Achaia’s Sacred Wines

Discover the legendary Vouraikos Gorge on an exclusive wine tour

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Vouraikos Gorge in Achaia in the Peloponnese is one of Greece’s natural wonders. A hiker’s paradise par excellence, visitors can also look forward to a spectacular rack railway. The Guardian lists this as one of the 10 best rail trips in the world!

Our exclusive “Achaia’s Sacred Wines” day tour from Athens transports you to this unique paradise. After a two-hour drive, the rack railway takes us to the beautiful town of Kalavryta in the mountains of Achaia, where we enjoy traditional Greek coffee and local sweets.

Afterwards, we visit the picturesque monastery of Mega Spileon in the Vouraikos Gorge, which dates back to the 4th century AD. Here the monks have been practising and perfecting the art of wine-growing for over 450 years. The excellent wines produced here are only available in limited quantities, which makes the delicious droplets particularly precious and this wine tour an extraordinary experience.

We round off the day with a delicious meal, where we sample almost forgotten dishes of Greek cuisine.

WHAT TO EXPECT
We collect you from your accommodation in Athens at 7 am in a luxuriously equipped mini-van. After a two-hour drive, we reach the rack railway on the Peloponnese. The train brings us through the breath-taking Vouraikos Gorge to the town of Kalavryta.

We take a stroll through the town, nestled in a wonderful mountain landscape, and stop at a traditional kafenion. Here we enjoy a freshly prepared Greek coffee and a sweet galaktoboureko, a kind of custard cake.

Afterwards, we continue into the gorge and visit the Orthodox monastery of Mega Spileon, built in the 4th century AD. The wine-growing region of Mega Ambelos belongs to this monastery. Here you learn all about the 450-year-old tradition of wine growing in the Vouraikos Gorge. In the shade of ancient trees, you then taste the delicious wines, accompanied by the explanations from our experienced sommelier.

To make this already perfect experience unforgettable, we round off the day with a gourmet meal. Culinary delights of traditional Greek cuisine will be served including stewed meat kokinisto, puff pastries filled with wild herbs, and rose petal desserts. Each course is accompanied by an appropriate wine.

After an extraordinary nature and gourmet experience, we arrive back at your accommodation in Athens around 5:30 pm.
