Entry, insurance & medical care

What are the entry requirements for Greece?

For European citizens from a member state of the Schengen Agreement, Greece’s entry regulations are quite straightforward. You may enter the country without a visa with an identity card or passport. The travel document used must have a validity of at least a further six months at the time of entry. You may remain in the country for an indefinite period of time for tourist purposes and travel freely. The EU duty-free allowances apply.

If you are travelling to Greece from a country outside the EU, it is often necessary to apply for a visa. A passport valid for at least a further six months is also a mandatory requirement for entry. Please inform yourself in advance at the respective Greek foreign representation in your country. Please also note the relevant customs and transit regulations.

What documents do I need when travelling to and within Greece?

The following documents are required for entry into Greece: A travel document valid for at least six months and, if applicable, a visa (see more on this under Entry Requirements), a credit and/or debit card, a health insurance card, and, if applicable, proof of additional overseas health insurance (optional).

We strongly recommend making a copy of all important documents before you start your trip and keeping them separately to ensure that you can quickly acquire a replacement in case you lose them. If you lose your travel documents during your stay in Greece, please contact the embassy or consulate of your home country in Greece. If you lose your bank cards, you should report this immediately to your own bank and have the cards blocked.

Do you recommend travel cancellation insurance?

Even the best planning can’t protect you from unforeseen events. Therefore, we always advise you to take out travel cancellation insurance.

Are there any mandatory vaccinations for a trip to Greece?

At the moment there are no mandatory vaccinations for travelling to Greece. Please check the website of your local foreign office before departure.

What is medical care like for tourists in Greece?

Medical care in Greece is good. We recommend bringing your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you on your trip. You can get this from your health insurance company. With this card, treatment in public health centres is free of charge.

Please note: We still advise you to take out private travel health insurance. Emergency treatment is free of charge for people with statutory health insurance in Greece. However, this only applies to public health service doctors. The costs of transporting patients back to their home country in the event of illness or treatment by private doctors or in private clinics are not covered by statutory health insurance.

What currency is used in Greece and what payment options are there in the country?

In Greece, the currency is the euro. In addition to payments with cash, payments with credit or EC cards are also common and are therefore accepted almost everywhere. Especially in larger shops, restaurants, bars or shopping centres, payment by credit or debit card is not a problem.

You can find ATMs for withdrawing cash in almost all towns and larger villages throughout the country.

Please note that cash in excess of 10,000 euro must be declared to customs.

Which time zone is Greece in?

The time in Greece is 3 hours ahead of UTC (UTC+3).  For more information, please visit: https://www.timezones.de/
