Is Mt. Olympus the highest mountain in Greece?
Yes, indeed. The mountain massif is located on the east coast of northern Greece, in Macedonia and Thessaly, near the village of Litochoro.

The highest peak of Mount Olympus is Mytikas with an altitude of 2,918 m / 9,573 ft. In 1938, the mountain range was declared Greece’s first national park due to its unique flora and fauna. UNESCO additionally designated Mount Olympus as a biosphere reserve in 1981.

Where is Mount Olympus located and how do I get there?
Mount Olympus is located 263 km / 163 mi. from Athens and 78 km / 48 mi. from Thessaloniki. You can reach the mountain massif by motorway and country roads that connect the towns and villages around the mountain.

You can also reach Mt Olympus by train or bus from both Athens and Thessaloniki. Nearby train stations can be found in Katerini, Litochoro, and Leptokaria, which are also served by the KTEL bus company.

A central taxi service is available at the main square in Litochoro. The nearest international airport is Makedonia Airport in Thessaloniki.

What activities can I do on Mount Olympus?
Numerous hiking paths and trails make the nature park an incredible destination for hiking enthusiasts, mountaineers, and mountain bikers. The mountain massif and its surroundings are also ideal for you when paragliding, canyoning and rafting, climbing or ski tours.

Can I climb Mount Olympus?
Mount Olympus is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers from all over the world. Olympus is not a technically difficult mountain to climb. Its most famous peaks are Mytikas, Skolio, and Stefani.

While Skolio is a suitable destination for recreational hikers, to climb Mytikas you should be an experienced mountaineer. The Stefani peak lies between these two in terms of difficulty and altitude. Due to its proximity to the sea, weather conditions can change quickly, so be sure to check the weather before climbing Mount Olympus!

To climb Mytikas, we always recommend a professional guide who knows the conditions and can correctly interpret weather forecasts. There are many hikers on Olympus every year, but only a few manage to climb the highest peak.

Mount Olympus has the most beautiful hiking trails for every level of difficulty and preference. One of these is the European long-distance trail E4, which leads west of Litochoro through the gorge of Enipeas to the summit.

There is also the Greek hiking trail O2, which connects Mount Olympus with the Pelion peninsula in the south. Another beautiful route is the one from Prionia via the Old Monastery of Agios Dionisios and the Sacred Cave to Litochoro. This hiking experience ends at the Litochoro mills. Incredible views are guaranteed! This moderately difficult hike takes about 5 to 6 hours.

There are seven huts on Mount Olympus, but they are often only open in spring and summer. Each hut offers sleeping accommodation and serves hot food and drinks at a reasonable price.

What is the weather like on Mount Olympus?
Mount Olympus is suitable for activities and excursions all year round. Summers are wonderfully warm and even on the summit, the temperatures are pleasant. Autumn and spring are particularly good for hiking and mountain biking. Skiing is also possible during the winter when the weather allows.

However, weather conditions can change quickly, and you must always stay well informed about any changes that may occur! After all, Mount Olympus has a large difference in altitude: It is possible to climb more than 1,900 m / 6,239 ft. in a day’s hike. This can lead to serious temperature differences, so suitable clothing is a must!
