Take a city break in Athens

Athens – six letters, one universe! A city break in Athens is an unforgettable experience. The Greek capital and birthplace of democracy is home to countless sights and awaits you with a great variety of outdoor activities. The city was named after the goddess Athena who, according to Greek mythology, symbolizes wisdom. Athens presents itself to you as a colorful and lively metropolis, full of contrasts. The capital is nestled between the hills and the sea on the Attica Peninsula and has fascinated visitors from all over the world for centuries.

The city is a multi-cultural hub which inspires you with its unique and vibrant flair. The entire old town is a designated pedestrian zone and can be likened to an open-air museum. The city’s rich history can be felt around every corner: Ancient temples can be found next to Byzantine churches opposite which lie Ottoman mosques. Above it all towers the majestic marble landmark of Athens, the Acropolis! When you are searching for an island atmosphere, you should head to the picturesque district of Anafiotika. As a street art enthusiast you will find your vivid wonderland in the districts of Psiri, Thissio, and Petralona.

Athens offers you a huge range of activities. So no matter what you would like to do on your holiday, the city has something for everyone! Whether a mythological walk through the historic center or a panoramic hike along the ‘Marble Road’ of Penteli. Whether a bike on the urban Pholopappos trails, or a coastal cycling tour along the Athens Riviera. Be it a kayak tour to the mythical Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion or an evening wine bar-hopping experience in the old town. The possibilities for your perfect city break in Athens are almost endless!

Does Athens have an airport?
Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is the largest airport in Greece. It is located about 35 km / 22 mi. southeast of the city centre of Athens.

From there, you can travel to almost any island in Greece, no matter how remote. To get from Athens airport to the city centre, you can either take the E95 bus, which runs every 15 minutes, or the metro to Syntagma Square or Monastiraki Square. Taxis are also available outside the terminal if you prefer more comfort.

What ferry connections are there from Athens?
There are regular ferry connections from the port of Piraeus to the Saronic Islands just outside the city, as well as to the Cyclades, Crete, and the Dodecanese Islands. You can buy ferry tickets either at the ferry offices or online.

What is the weather like in and around Athens?
Athens has a mild Mediterranean climate. The average annual temperature is 18.2 °C / 64.8 °F. The coldest month is January with an average of 10 °C / 50 °F, while the warmest month is July with an average of 28 °C / 82 °F.

The sea around Athens reaches temperatures of about 24 °C / 75 °F in the summer months. In Athens, it rains on average only 45 days a year and snowfall is an extremely rare occurrence. If you want to know more, take a look at the Athens climate table.

When is the best time to visit Athens?
Athens is a very worthwhile destination all year round. The best months for your visit are March to June and October and November. During this period, fewer tourists visit the city than in summer, and you may enjoy sightseeing and outdoor activities more due to lower temperatures.

How many days do I need for a visit to Athens?
Even if you lived in Athens for years, you still probably wouldn’t be able to see it all! If it is your first trip to the Greek capital, you should allow at least four days to see the main sights. If you are staying for a shorter time, we advise you to decide in advance what you want to see and how to get from A to B. This will save you a lot of time when you get there.

What should I see in Athens?
On your first trip to Athens, the Acropolis and the architectural masterpiece that is the new Acropolis Museum are must-sees. Visits to the Greek and Roman Agora, the Temple of Olympian Zeus are also worthwhile. The same applies to the ancient Kerameikos cemetery. You can buy a five-day combination ticket for all the major archaeological sites for 30 euro.

Philopappos Hill offers you the best view over the rooftops of Athens and the Acropolis. If possible, you should plan a walk up there in the morning or early evening. Then the light is at its best and the temperatures are pleasant.

As strange as it sounds, one of the highlights of Athens for us is the underground stations in the city centre. These were transformed into small museums during the 2004 Olympic Games. The excursion into Athens’ underworld is especially worthwhile at the Acropolis station, Monastiraki station and at Syntagma.

If you’re visiting Parliament Square, be sure to take a detour to the enchanting National Garden. It is a true oasis of calm in the bustling city. Another special experience is simply wandering through the narrow streets of the Plaka and Psiri districts.

Interrupt this stroll with a Greek coffee or two, a classic game of backgammon (the Greeks call it tavli), or a glass of ouzo and you’ll be a true Athenian in no time!

Are there nice beaches in Athens?
There are many beaches in and around Athens. However, we generally advise against swimming at any of the beaches near the city. Don’t forget that around 4 million people live in the greater Athens area, which of course has an impact on water quality. However, you can enjoy swimming at the beautiful sandy beaches on the east coast and at Cape Sounion located in the very south of Attica
